The California native grew up the youngest of three on the beaches of La Jolla, near San Diego, but did not catch her first wave until age 13. North was born on December 8, 1980 in La Jolla, California. She began her athletic career as a child in ballet class. From there it was on to soccer, volleyball and field hockey, but eventually her passions were narrowed to surfing and volleyball. Since her mother didn't have the money or the transportation for Veronica to pursue volleyball, she had to give it up eventually.
