North was born on December 8, 1980 in La Jolla, California. She began her athletic career as a child in ballet class. From there it was on to soccer, volleyball and field hockey, but eventually her passions were narrowed to surfing and volleyball. Since her mother didn't have the money or the transportation for Veronica to pursue volleyball, she had to give it up eventually. However, the family lived just a two-minute walk from the beach, so her decision about which sport to pursue was an easy one to make.

When Veronica was 15 years old, she convinced her mother that she could support herself as a model. Each modeling job she did carried her for a little while and ultimately, the gamble paid off, and now she is able to support her mother and even send her back to school, where she is studying to become a teacher for special education.

Veronica, whose lives in Encinitas, CA, splits her career between surfing and snowboarding. In 1997, she came in first at the NSSA Championship, where she was discovered by her current sponsor, Roxy. She also participates as a member of the Quicksilver Snowboarding Team, foregoing Hawaii for the European Alps.
