Tlc Biography
By breaking onto the music scene in 1992 with the release of their first album titled Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip, this trio began its journey towards becoming one of the best-selling female groups ever. Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas brought their musical talents together in Atlanta, Georgia to form TLC.
Their debut album sold three million copies and featured two platinum selling singles, "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" and "Baby-Baby-Baby." The third single off the album, "What About Your Friends?" went gold. Much of TLC's initial success could be attributed to producer Perri Reid and R&B hit-maker Dallas Austin. By bringing these three talented performers together, they were able to create an album that successfully mixed a combination of hip-hop, dance and R&B music.
After making a name for themselves with Ooooooh... On the TLC Tip!, the trio dropped out of the spotlight for a little while to record their highly anticipated second album. During this break, however, they managed to keep making headlines. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes found herself in serious legal trouble after accidentally burning down her boyfriend's mansion and trashing his cars during a fit of drunken rage. She was later admitted to an alcohol rehabilitation clinic, becoming one of America's top headliners.
These incidents helped inspire the title of their second album, CrazySexyCool. The title refers to the different attributes that make up the personalities of each group member, Lisa Lopes having more of the crazy side in her, Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas representing the sexier element of the group, and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins being the cool member.
Following its release in 1994, CrazySexyCool sold more than 10 million copies. The album led to a total of six Grammy Award nominations for TLC. They won two awards that night, one for Best R&B Performance by a Duo/Group for the single "Creep," and another for Best R&B Album. The trio won numerous other awards for the album, including two Lady of Soul Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, three Soul Train Music Awards, and a Blockbuster Entertainment Award.
Two major hits to come off of CrazySexyCool were "Creep" and "Waterfalls," both having achieved platinum-plus status. Much of the album's success could be attributed to beats that were provided by Jermaine Dupri (of Kris Kross and Lil' Bow Wowfame), as well as Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.
Unfortunately, due to a record deal gone awry, the beautiful trio was forced to file for bankruptcy in 1995 with liabilities exceeding $3.5 million. If that wasn't bad enough, more complications arose reagrding the group's management. Pebbitone, the group's original record label, made the group feel like they were in a chokehold. After much debating and tugging, TLC finally said sayonara to Pebbitone and signed with LaFace Records.
In 1999, TLC returned with their third album, Fanmail. The first single, "No Scrubs," instantly climbed its way to the top of the US Hot 100 charts and spent several weeks in the UK Top 10. This single dropped around the same time that "Girl Power" was at its peak, and paid homage to the male scum of the earth. Men without cars, jobs and money became the target of independent women worldwide.
The single earned the group two awards at the 2000 Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. Hot off the heels of "No Scrubs" came the trio's smash hit, "Unpretty." This single made its way to the top of the US charts in September of 1999.
During TLC's "Fanmail" tour in January 2000, TLC was presented with a key to their native Atlanta, Georgia, by the city's Mayor.
Although TLC has been off the radar for quite some time now, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes has been generating buzz, with her on-and-off wedding plans to Andre Rison (the guy whose mansion she burnt down), and her solo release, Supernova. The album is due for release October 16, 2001, and has spawned the first single, "The Block Party."
Off the radar for some time, the tragic death of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was announced on Friday April 26, 2002. She was killed in a car accident in Honduras, where she was said to be vacationing. Apparently, Lisa had been a frequent visitor of the region, as she worked with a child development center in the area. She will be sadly missed by millions of TLC fans, as well as those who knew and loved her.
