Elliott began his acting career on the stage and his film debut was a western called Butch Cassidyand the Sundance Kid (1969). Elliott was listed as one of twelve "Promising New Actors of 1976" in John Willis' Screen World, Vol. 28 in 1976. Sam Elliott continues to land leading roles in features, including Pretty When You Cry (2001), playing a modern day detective, We Were Soldiers (2002) starring alongside Mel Gibsonand the role of Ross in Hulk (2003).
