Mysterio is famed for employing aerial techniques in the ring and holds a place in the wrestling history books for winning the WCW/WWE Cruiserweight championship more times than anyone else (eight times).

His real name is Óscar Gutiérrez y Rubio, and his other ring names are Rey Misterio, Jr. and Rey Mysterio, Jr. His name honours his uncle and trainer, Rey Misterio, Sr.

Rey Junior started wrestling in 1989 in Mexico when he was just 14-years-old, but he was too young to legally wrestle in the United States and was not granted a license. He was also underage to wrestle in Mexico, but the rules are much more lax.

His Mexican career started using the name Colibri (which means hummingbird in Spanish) but when she reached 18 his uncle allowed him to take his name and become Rey Misterio, Jr. But Rey gave the name his own stamp by later dropping the Jr and changing the spelling of Misterio to Mysterio.

Throughout his career, Mysterio has been locked with an on-off feud with Psicosis, another wrester who was trained by Misterio Sr. This feud generated much publicity for Mysterio and the pair’s match in 1995 (which Rey won) made an impact for him in American professional wrestling. Rey joined Psicosis in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1996 and their feuding continued to bring the duo attention. While at the WCW, Mysterio won many Cruiser Championships

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Mysterio fought many high profile matches. Including another fued in 1999, this time with Kevin Nash. He lost this fight and was unmasked, before returning to Mexico where his star status continued to grow.

Mysterio decided to return to the WWE in 2002. Here he was asked to wear his mask again. In Mexico, a wrestler can be fined for wearing his mask after he has lost it.

In February 2005, Mysterio fought to victory at his third WWE Tag-Team Championship. He paired up with his long-term friend, and formal rival, Eddie Guerrero. Also this match ended their feud temporarily, it was soon back on. But in November 2005, Guerrero was sadly found death in his hotel room. This sad news devastated Mysterio, who, clearly upset, made a heart-wrenching speech about Guerrero at a match later than day. He even took off his mask in respect.

Mysterio’s recent achievements include becoming the new WWE Tag Team Champions, along with Batista, after defeating MNM. Guerrero was still very much on Mysterio’s mind, and both he and Batista dedicated their victory to Eddie.

Mysterio also won the January 2006 Royal Rumble in Miami, Florida. He is both the lightest and shortest wrester to have won this competition.

Some trivia about Mysterio is that he wears contact lenses to match the colours of his clothes during every match, he wears an EG armband during every match to pay tribute to Eddie Guerrero, and has numerous tattoos adorning his body; including his kids’ names and the word ’Mexican’ on his stomach.
