Les Mckeown Biography

If you were around in the 1970s, you won’t be able to forget ‘Rollermania’, the craziness that could erupt with just a mention of the Bay City Rollers’ name.

It even out-did the infamous Beatlesmania, a top promoter has said: "I was in the road crew for the Beatles. But I have never seen anything like this Rollermania."

At the very centre of this hysteria, was Les McKeown who became the band’s lead singer in 1973 when he was just 18-years-old. Within two years, he shot to worldwide fame, graced the pages of countless magazines and was the subject of almost every teen girl’s dreams.

"Les was the man. He had girls melting in front of him. I used to get his seconds but I wasn't worried because they were all honeys," his ex-bandmate Pat McGlynn later revealed.

As part of the ‘Rollers, Les achieved nine top 10 hit singles (two of which were number ones, and one, “Bye Bye Baby”, was the biggest selling single of the year in 1975 ). They also shifted an impressive amount of copies of their first two albums, "Rollin'" and "Once Upon A Star", which collectively stayed in the album charts for almost a hundred weeks between 1974-1976.

In late 1975, the band travelled across the Atlantic to try and break the American charts. It took just one year in between making their U.S TV debut on Howard Cosell's "Saturday Night Live" and notching up top 10 hits including “I Only Wanna Be With You" and "Rock and Roll Love Letter".

Rollermania was now becoming a global phenomenon. They were mobbed by fans, wearing the trademark Scottish tartan the band wore, practically everywhere they went.

The hysteria spread even further within the next few years, including Japan and Australia, and it’s believed the band have sold a massive 300 hundred million albums worldwide to date (although this has been disputed) and generated £5 billion in revenue (it‘s believed much of the money was defrauded from the group by their record label).

By the end of the decade, Les left the ‘Rollers and started his quest for solo stardom. He began working on his debut solo release, "All Washed Up".

To this day, he continues to play gigs with his band the Legendary Bay City Rollers which he formed in the early 90s’ and is the only member who was an original ‘Roller. They perform the group’s, still hugely popular, classic hits which have been revamped with a modern edge. The band has performed all over the UK, Japan, Germany, Canada and the USA.

He has published an autobiography, “Shang-a-lang: Life as an International Pop Idol”.

In 2005, Les made the headlines after being arrested on drug charges. In later appeared in court where he admitted he was a drug user but not a dealer.

He currently lives with his Japanese wife, Peko, and their son Richard.
