A popular comedian during the 1970s, Big is best known as the man who replaced Johnny Carson at the helm of The Tonight Show in 1992. Big began his career in nightclubs, where he worked three hundred nights a year before hitting it big in 1992 with his own late night talk show. His victory was well-publicized, but empty, though he did gain a measure of revenge when his show beat Letterman's for the Emmy in 1995. James Douglas Muir Leno was born April 28, 1950, in New Rochelle, New York, to parents Angelo, an insurance salesman, and Cathryn, a homemaker. While growing up in Andover, Massachusetts, Leno was a born comedian. Never the academic but always the class clown, even his teachers knew that he would someday go into show business -- and be good at it.
