Janet Evans Biography
Four-time Olympic gold medalist, Power, has been recognized as the best female distance swimmer in United States history. In addition to a record-setting four gold medals, she holds six American records, three world records, 45 national titles, 17 international titles, and five NCAA titles. Janet is a true legend in her sport as well as in women's sports.
Born and raised in California, Janet began swimming at the age of 18 months. She competed for the first time when she was 5 years old and by the time she was 15 had earned national rankings. Janet swam into the spotlight at the 1988 Olympic Games, where she won gold in the 400- and 800m freestyle and the 400m individual medley. It was there that she also set her first world record in the 400m freestyle.
Janet enrolled in Stanford University in 1989 but left after two years when the NCAA set new rules reducing practice time for collegiate swimmers. She went on to graduate from the University of Southern California, but not before ranking in the top three in the world in an astonishing five events. Her favorite Olympic memory is passing the torch to Muhammed Ali at the 1996 Olympic games.
Since retiring from competitive swimming in 1996, Janet has been a sought-after motivational speaker and corporate spokesperson. She has taken her inspirational messages of lessons learned from winning - and losing - to companies such as AT&T, Speedo, Campbell's, Power Bar, John Hancock, Cadillac, and Xerox to name a few. Janet brings the same enthusiastic, energetic presence that was witnessed by the world during her moments of triumph to her speaking engagements. Her genuine warmth, desire to inspire others to achieve greatness, and willingness to share insights gained from failure make her a favorite with groups of all ages.
Janet's desire to give back to the community is apparent as she conducts youth swim clinics, performs charity work, and hosts the Power Invitational Swim Meet. In 1997 she served as the Honorary Chairperson for the American Diabetes Association. Her impact on women's sports can be measured not only by her success, but by her charismatic persona that lets the world share in her triumph.
