Lea acerca de David Ortiz en Espa?ol

David Ortiz is a Major League baseball star famed for being one of the best hitters in the game.

David caught the baseball bug from his father, Enrique, who loved the sport and played in both pro and semipro leagues. David watched his father play and started to love it too. When he started high school, he became a star on the basketball team, before scouts caught a glimpse of his skill and toughness and started to see his potential as a future power hitter.

When he was 17, David started his career with the Seattle Mariners. Four years later, he was sent to Minnesota and made his debut in 1997. Minnesota later ditched him for constantly being plagued by injuries, allowing the Boston Red Sox to snap him up. He is first baseman/designated hitter.

He quickly proved what he was capable of, leading many to believe he was the future of the team. In 2004, he fulfilled his potential with a successful season. Among his achievements that year were, along with Manny Ramírez, becoming the first two American League team-mates to it 40 home 40 home runs, have 100 RBI, and bat .300 since the Yankees Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in 1931, and the first Red Sox pair with 40 homers since Tony Armas and Jim Rice in 1984.

Impressively, in 2005 the Red Sox’s owner, John Henry, named David "The Best Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox."

David, who bats and throws left-handed, consistently hits for power to all fields and as a slugger, he is a solid two-strike hitter and proves difficult to strike out. David simply puts it: “I swing hard all the time. That's what I've done my whole life - hit.”

He has describes what he likes most about playing the sport: “I just love the feeling from the fans and when I'm walking on deck I can hear people screaming and wishing you the best. That puts you into the game more than anything.”

In 2002, tragedy struck when David’s mother died on a New Years Day car accident. This only made David more determined and focused on his baseball playing than ever before.

David is married to Tiffanyand they have three children together - Yessica, Alexandra and D’Angelo (with the D for David and Angelo from his beloved mother‘s name, Angela).
